G Star Diving Competition 2018
On 15th March, a squad of 21 divers and 3 coaches from Southampton Diving Academy travelled to Leeds to compete in the annual G-Star diving competition. This event attracts divers of a very high standard including Commonwealth and Olympic divers. For a large number of the children from Southampton, this was their first time competing at this level.
In the girls 9 to 11 age category, Maija Adamson got Southampton off to an amazing start on the 5m platform to qualify 6th place in the preliminary round and making it through to the finals, where she dived with great consistency to take the bronze medal.
There was further success in the girls 12 to 13 age group 3m springboard with Freya Kelly qualifying in 5th position in the preliminary round and going on to win Silver in the final.
In the girls 14 to 15 age category both Georgia Adamson and Victoria Low gained a place in the finals with Georgia securing third place and Victoria narrowly missing out on a medal just 4 points behind. Georgia was on great form and also qualified for the finals in both the 1m and 3m springboard competitions, going on to win Gold in the 3m and another Bronze in the 1m final.
Competition in the Boys 16+ category was fierce with Cameron Gammage and Brandon Foster up against some of the UK’s best divers. On the Platform, Brandon was placed 2nd in the preliminary competition and achieved a Bronze medal in the final. On the 1m springboard Cameron secured 5th place in the preliminary competition and finished in an agonising 4th place missing out on a medal by just 0.4 points behind Olympic gold medalist Jack Laugher. On the 3m springboard preliminaries both Cameron and Brandon achieved places in the final and against fierce competition Brandon finished 4th and Cameron 6th.
The weather during the competition presented its own challenges with heavy snow showers. Despite this the trip ran without issue and the Southampton coaches were extremely pleased with how the team performed.
Coach Mollie James said “I am extremely impressed with the performances SDA produced this weekend, our divers were comfortably diving amongst some of the best divers in the country.”
