Albatross Interclub 2016
Southampton Diving Academy recently sent a team of 45 novice divers to The Albatross Interclub 2016 competition in Reading. For most, this was their first competition outside of Southampton and they returned with an impressive total of 7 medals.
This competition allows the novice divers to move away from their basic skill set to compete with more complicated dives, performing four dives each from poolside and the 1m and 3m springboards.
SDA saw one of its youngest divers Megan Thorpe aged just 7, win a gold medal, an amazing achievement for such a young diver.
In the Boys 8 – 9 group, our incredible SDA divers took the top 4 places. Reuben Havenga took Gold with a very impressive total score of 99.3. His 1 metre back dive giving him a tremendous 30 points however it was his forward line up from the 3 metre springboard that had the crowd cheering where he scored two 9s and two 7.5s from a maximum score of 10 for his efforts. Luke Hardy achieved the silver medal, Drew Brightwell took Bronze and Oliver Wignall a very respectful 4th place!! Amazing results from the boys in this age category.
Leila Coupal and Amber Woodford competing in the Girls 10-11 years both achieved top 6 places and received medals, for Amber this was her first ever competition against divers from other clubs.
As mentioned, this was the first time competing away from the home training pool for many of the youngsters and they all performed really well in unfamiliar waters, which assisted in SDA achieving second place in the team event from a total of 14 teams taking part. The divers in the older age groups are almost all new to the sport and were up against divers with many more years experience, so they performed really well under the pressure in those categories.
Fancy having a go on the springboard? Diving really is accessible to all ages and abilities (even grown ups!), so pop into The Quays and ask for more information on taster sessions or lessons.
