Southampton Invitational 2017

16th Southampton Invitational

Southampton Diving Academy opened the new competitive diving season to claim success; hosting its 16th Southampton Invitational competition, the team retained the team trophy once again. This three day event attracts some of the best young divers in Great Britain and many really are stars of the future, this year was no exception with 160 divers in attendance from across the nation.
In a cracking display of Girl Power for SDA, we saw clean sweeps on the podium in the Girls 16+ years in the Platform and 1m events. Lucy Hawkins retained her title from last year, taking the gold medal on the platform, with Tanya Watson the silver and Gemma McCarthur the bronze. The same 3 in reverse order took the top slots on the 1m, with McCarthur taking gold, Watson silver and Hawkins bronze. The 3m springboard saw Watson take a well deserved gold and Hawkins the silver.
Girls 14/15 years were just as dominant. Georgia Adams storming to gold on the platform, with team mates Evelyna Johnson in silver, and newcomer to this level of competition Victoria Low delighted to take a bronze. Johnson nicked the gold in the 3m event ahead of Adams in silver, with Lauren Hallaselka taking the bronze. Hallaselka got her moment of glory though with a resounding victory to take gold medal in the 1m event ahead of Johnson in the silver medal position.
In Girls 12/13 years our team were clearly inspired by their older team mates; Maya Kutty took gold in the platform event, silver on the 3m, and a second gold on the 1m board, team mate Dulcie Wilson taking the bronze.
The SDA boys were also in fine form with Brandon Foster in Boys 16+ years taking silver in the 1m event and Thomas Bailey taking silver in the 3m event.
In Boys 14/15 years, Cameron Gammage took a double gold in the 1m and the 3m events, with a silver from the platform event. Angus Kerr taking the bronze on the platform and 1m.
Onto Boys 12/13 years, SDA again were dominant. Leon Baker was in top form and took all 3 golds with some beautiful diving. The platform event was hotly contested between the top 3 qualifying divers – all SDA boys – and no one else really stood a chance. Robbie Lee taking silver medal and Milo French the bronze. Lee also took a bronze on the 3m springboard, Nathan Bull taking a brilliant silver on the 1m.
Also achieving a place in the finals, winning top six medals and contributing to the overall team trophy win were: Ethan Bennett, Scott Palmer, Tia Pritchard, Victoria Low, Alex Walton, Jessica Bennett and Dulcie Wilson .
Director of Coaching, Lindsey Fraser said “The level of diving was very high, and our divers excelled in the environment. Well done to all divers and their coaches”.
Many other SDA divers competed at this level for the first time and the future is looking bright for the 17th Southampton Invitational next year.
