South East Region Skills
Crawley June 11th 2017
On Sunday 11th June, 60 divers from Southampton Diving Academy travelled to Crawley to take part in the South East Region Skills Competition. This was valuable competition experience for all and for some, a final chance to achieve the recommended points to enable them to qualify for this year’s National Skills Final. The event included an open competition for any divers affiliated to a Swim England Club, and a closed competition restricted to divers from the Swim England South East region.
The day got off to a great start with the Girls 8/9 years category, on form Megan Thorpe taking 1st place followed onto the podium by team mates Isabelle Geary and Evie Tierney in 2nd and 3rd. Not to be outdone, in the Boys 8/9 years, Ethan Pearce-Williams took 1st place with some very consistent diving, closely followed in second place by team mate Euan Powell.
The medals kept on coming, with Jamie Akerman taking the 1st place in Boys 10/11 years group, with a fantastic overall score of 310.45. There was a close battle for 3rd position between Luke Hardy and Oliver Wignall in the same group, with Luke Hardy securing his 3rd place with a great final dive on the 1m board scoring three 8s. Girls 10/11 years was a tough group with nearly 40 divers taking part in the open event. In the closed event four of the top six places were taken by Southampton divers: Anjali Kutty took 1st place with Olivia Szymczak, Darshi Rana and Maija Adamson taking 3rd, 4th and 5th respectively.
There was no let up in the hunt for medals as the divers in Boys 12/13 years took to the boards. Illan Stead took 2nd place with 301.20 points and was awarded one of the few 9s of the competition for his tuck to pike roll from the 3m board. Three other SDA divers finished in the top six. Jacob Smith, Samuel Stevens and Bevan Woolley finishing in 3rd, 4th and 5th. The competition for the 3rd place was very tight with less than 4 points between these boys. The highest scoring Southampton diver in the equivalent girls group was Emma Bolton who finished in 2nd place.
The days competition came to a close with the divers aged 14/18 years, and finished as it had begun with Southampton divers securing 1st place in both events. Thomas MacFadyen scored a fantastic 327.10 points to take 1st place in the boys event with team mate Max Targett in 2nd place, and Victoria Low took 1st place in the girls 14/18 years event.
Many of these divers will now be preparing to compete at the National Skills Final to be held at the London Aquatic Centre in July and will be contenders for the top prizes at National level. Director of Coaching, Lindsey Fraser spent the day at the event, watching the new crop of emerging talent from across the region, and said “I was there to oversee the meet and was very impressed with all of our divers, their posture was particularly good, so it was clear who the divers from SDA were when they stood on the board!”.
