Sofia, Bulgaria was the location for Southampton Diving Academy’s latest trip.

With their chosen summer venue of Barcelona occupied by the World Diving Championships this year, SDA sourced an alternative venue for its divers to gain valuable international experience in an outdoor pool. The team of 23 divers competed against teams from Germany, Russia, Ukraine, Romania, Serbia, and Bulgaria and were winners of the Rodina Diving Cup team trophy on their first ever visit to the competition.

The team arrived in Bulgaria and immediately headed for The Diana Pool, Sofia, for training. For many it was their first international trip, and most, their first competing in an outdoor pool. This team of confident divers, supported by experienced coaches Jack Clewlow, Chris Farrow and Fran Godfroy showed self-assurance and were not deterred by the fact that it was, for most, their first experience of diving outdoors.

Leading the way for SDA was Mollie James, diving in the Girls 16+ years she continued her run of success by scoring personal bests and winning medals on all three boards, Silver on 3m Springboard and Bronze on both 1m Springboard and Platform.

Lewys Oakley, Portia Angove and William Rigelsford and also achieved medals in their Platform events, Lewys won Silver in the Boys 14/15 Years. Portia gained Silver in the Girls 14/15 Years and William scored a massive personal best score and a bronze medal placing in the Boys 16+ Years.

The SDA divers put in some great performances and other notable performances came from Angus Kerr, Lucy Hawkins, Max Cott, Thomas Graham and Eleanor Philips who all achieved a top 6 placing.

Senior Coach Jack Clewlow said “Travelling overseas always creates an extra challenge for our divers and the other European Countries were very strong, but SDA showed great vigour and team spirit and were worthy winners of the team trophy.”
