It may have meant an early start as they set off to Southend well before dawn, but a lack of sleep didn't stop pupils from Hampshire schools, who were representing Division 12, winning a hat-trick of gold medals at the English Schools Springboard Diving Finals last week. Eight local boys and girls, all divers of the Southampton Diving Academy, had been chosen to represent Hampshire, Dorset, Sussex and the Channel Islands, and three came home as English champions. The event was really close and it all came down to the last event to know which division would be Champions. Steven Lingard from Southampton's Cantell School took it all the way to the final dive to secure victory in the Senior Boys event, and bring home the trophy. Other winners were Rosie Medlock, who earlier this year became the Junior European platform champion, from Thornden School in Chandlers' Ford, who was up against some very good springboard divers and had a clear win in the Intermediate Girls. At the younger end 10-year old Miranda Dibden from Twyford School in Winchester won an incredibly close competition by just 0.5 points in the Primary Girls event. A Bronze medal was won by Robbie Brodie of Ludlow Junior School in the Primary Boys group, only just missing out on a Silver place by 0.2 points. The competitors represented schools from all over England. Lindsey Fraser, the Head Coach at Southampton Diving Academy said "I am really impressed with the performances of all of our team and the superb team spirit they showed to become the best Schools division in the Country. It is a mark of the excellent work being done by all the coaches in Southampton that we can be victorious at each and every level of the sport." Other results: Senior Girls 5th Lauren Grinstead from The Weald, Intermediate Boys 4th Lewis Colman-Smith from Bournemouth Collegiate School, Junior Boys 4th Max Cott from Bridge Mary Sports College, Junior Girls 5th Portia Angove from Sholing Technical College. |
