G-Star Championships 2010

A team of 29 divers from Southampton Diving Academy travelled to Leeds to compete in the G-Star Championships and came back with 2 Gold, 7 Silver, 7 Bronze medals and the overall Team Trophy. Top of the medals table on the Southampton team was Georgie Wingrove (14) who took Gold on tower and Bronze on 1m. After recording the highest female dive score of the meet on her back two and a half somersaults with one and a half twists from the 10m board, she went into the final in third place. Despite stiff competition from her team mates Bethany Watts (14), who performed an outstanding reverse two and a half somersaults in the final and Rosie Medlock (14), Georgie executed 3 excellent dives to take gold, with Bethany taking silver and Rosie bronze completing a full podium for Southampton. In addition to Bethany’s Silver on tower she also dived very well on 3m and gained a bronze medal. The other Gold went to Abbie Baker (11) who dived consistently on 1m, averaging nearly 40 points a dive on her three complicated dives and beating strong divers from Crystal Palace, whilst team mate Max Cott (11) scooped a medal in all 3 of his events, with Silvers on Tower and 1m and a Bronze on 3m. Mollie James (12) managed a steady performance to come from behind on tower to win a Silver medal and also won a Bronze on 1m, Lewis Oakley (11) continued his recent success with 2 Silver medals on 1m and 3m, and right behind him on both boards was William Rigelsford (12), with 2 Bronzes, whilst team mates Alastair Khakoo (12) kept his nerve on tower to finish with a Silver medal. Chris Farrow (18) dived well in a tough competition to gain a Bronze medal on 1m. Team Coach, Chris Gravestock was extremely happy with the divers' successes. "This is meet is always a challenge for our divers," he explained. "there were entries from the top divers from all the top clubs in the Country including current GB International divers, so even to make a final is quite a feat. I am delighted that we saw some great performances from some of our divers and they were rewarded with these medals and am looking forward to seeing how those of them who have qualified for British Junior Elite and the National Age Groups fare over the next couple of months".
