Media release for Southampton Diving Academy

Armada Cup 2009

A team of 31 divers from Southampton Diving Academy traveled to Plymouth to compete in the Armada Diving Cup Competition and came back with a total of 11 medals and joint winners of the team trophy with hosts Plymouth Diving.

Competing against top clubs from all over Great Britain the team put in an outstanding performance to tie the competition with the very strong Plymouth team containing nine more divers and two Olympians. Many of Southampton's top elite divers did not compete at this competition making tying for the team trophy an amazing achievement.

The team boasted 5 gold, 4 silver and 2 bronze medals between them.

The most successful diver of the team was Lewys Oakley (10), competing in the youngest age group for the boys, who picked up gold medals on the 3 metre springboard and 5 metre platform. Lewys was just pipped in to silver position on the 1 metre springboard.
Coach Charly Tomkys said 'Lewys showed his competitive edge in the 3m competition where he was in second place up until the last dive. He then went on to perform his most difficult dive, an inward 2 ½ somersaults in the tuck position, and scored 56.7 points, 7's from the majority of the judges, to take the gold'.

Diving consistently well in the youngest girls age group Chloe Pook (11) scooped gold on both 1 metre and 3 metre springboard. In the same age group Portia Angove (11) took the opportunity of raising her game to move from 4th in the preliminaries to take gold in the platform final. Portia also took silver on the 3 metre springboard. Coach Charly Tomkys said 'these girls have shown they can compete against the top girls in the country and the results this weekend have shown that they are on track for great results at the Junior Elite National Championships in May this year'.

Alastair Khakoo (11) took silver on platform despite the fact he has moved up an age group this year, showing that he is still a competitor and one to watch.

Diving consistently, Sarah White (11) took bronze in the platform event against strong opposition performing her 7m platform optional dives to good effect.

At the other end of the age spectrum Chris Farrow (17) made two springboard finals picking up a silver and bronze medals on the 3 metre and 1 metre springboards respectively.
