Children from more than forty schools across the Southampton region competed on Saturday in the annual Southampton Schools Diving Competition at The Quays Swimming & Diving Complex. The competition was open to children of up to 13 years of age who are still competing at novice level. With some 40 children competing, most schools were represented by only one diver - but the number of schools involved shows just how widespread is interest in diving in the region and just how far some of these young divers travel to classes at The Quays. The Primary Schools Competition was won by North Baddesley Infant School. The prize for the highest scoring Secondary school for children in Years 7 and 8 was shared by The Westgate School and Wildern School. The competition is organised by the Southampton Schools Sports Association with the volunteers all coming from Southampton Diving Academy, and is designed to give young and new divers a chance to try out their skills in competition. Southampton-based British Olympians Blake Aldridge and Stacie Powell were there to meet the children and the Southampton Diving Academy display team inspired them to greater heights (literally) with an exciting programme of dives. And Max Brick, the new diving partner of Olympic diver Tom Daley, presented medals along with the Sheriff of Southampton , Councillor Carol Cunio. Max was a winner of the Southampton Schools events six years ago and now he is about to represent Great Britain at the World Championships next month - a true example of what these young divers could achieve.
