Southampton Diving Academy is on the hunt for local children to follow in the footsteps of Peter Waterfield, Olympic silver medallist. The club, based at The Quays Swimming and Diving Complex, is working through Southampton Diving Programme to seek out youngsters to be fast tracked in the sport with a view to competing at national and international level. Over the summer holidays there will be an opportunity for any child aged 6 – 11 years to come and demonstrate their potential to coaches led by Lindsey Fraser, the Olympic diving coach who took Peter from his first lessons at the age of 9 to his Olympic medal in 2004. In 2008 three of her divers were included in Team GB. The Academy has a record of taking youngsters to the top of the sport. Max Brick (17) took his first lesson at the Quays in 2003 and is currently competing at the World Championships in Rome both in the individual and synchronised platform events, partnering Thomas Daley from Plymouth. In the initial stage children do not need to be competent swimmers to take part. "We are looking for children who are up for a challenge, well co-ordinated and flexible," explained Fraser. "They also need to have a competitive streak." Anyone wishing to participate should contact the diving administrator, Annie Clewlow on 023 8072 0922 or email annie.clewlow@southampton.gov.uk. |
