SOUTHAMPTON Diving Academy is hoping to attract members of the Great Britain 2008 Beijing Olympics squad to compete in its annual competition next month (October 25-27, 2008). The Academy, which includes three British 2008 Olympians in its ranks and Team GB Coach, Lindsey Fraser, is staging three days of junior and senior competitions at The Quays Swimming and Diving Complex in Harbour Parade, Southampton from Saturday, October 25 until Monday, October 27. Annie Clewlow, Chair of Southampton Diving Academy, said: "We would like to attract members of the Great Britain 2008 Olympic team to our seventh Southampton Invitational competition. "The competition has become an annual event with diving taking place from 8am to 8pm on each day. There will be different junior age group competitions and senior classes." Annie and the Academy are appealing for a sponsor to support the competition and help back talented divers attempting to be part of the British team competing at the 2012 London Olympics. Annie continued: "By sponsoring the competition, the sponsor will be supporting the up and coming divers who are potential members of the 2012 Olympic team. We are hoping to attract sponsorship of £10,000. Donations of any size are welcome and we're happy to discuss sponsorship packages of all types. "The sponsorship will be used to support the divers competing in the competition and help fund the future British Olympians by providing prize money which should attract the top British team divers to compete in Southampton. "The prize money will benefit the divers who mostly have to fund themselves and any financial support they receive helps with their training and competition life as they strive to get to the 2012 Olympics." The Academy is hoping to attract a competition sponsor by offering to have the sponsor's name included in the official title of the competition and promoting the benefits of being linked with an event receiving regional newspaper and TV coverage. Four members of the Academy were part of Team GB competing at the Beijing Olympics last month (August 2008), divers Stacie Powell, Peter Waterfield and Blake Aldridge were joined by their club Coach, Lindsey Fraser. Annie added: "We expect around 200 spectators for each of the 11 diving sessions during the competition. Last year there were 110 entrants. We would expect the number of entrants to increase if we are offering prize money and to include more top international divers. "We also have VIPS regularly attend the event including the Mayor and Sheriff of Southampton, city councillors and dignitaries from the Amateur Swimming Association."
