Media release for Southampton Diving Academy

ENGLISH SCHOOLS

Members of Southampton Diving Academy filled all eight places in the top team at the English National Schools final held in Hereford at the weekend.

Competing for Division 12, which covers Dorset, East/West Sussex, Hampshire, the Channel Isles and the Isle of Wight, the divers, who all train at the Quays Swimming and Diving Complex, came back with 2 gold, 2 silver and 3 bronze medals and the team trophy.

The gold medallists were Lewys Oakley (10) and Ellie Fleming (12), diving in the Primary Boys' and Junior Girls' events respectively.

Putting in a fairly consistent list of dives, Lewys' top scoring skill was his inward 1 ½ somersaults off the 3m springboard, which earned him a total of 40.95 points, including a 7 from one of the judges.

Justifying her recent selection for the national Junior Development Talent and Recruitment Programme, Ellie was a convincing winner, taking her gold with a lead of over 40 points against her nearest rival.

SDA also sent one diver for Division 10. Chris Mears (15) who lives in Reading and trains 5 times a week in Southampton took silver in his event.

Coach for the meet, Charly Tomkys, was delighted with the outcome. "They all dived well and the team were very worthy winners in a demanding competition," she said.
