Media release for Southampton Diving Academy

WORLD MASTERS

Three of Southampton Diving Academy's Masters Divers, who train at the Quays Swimming and Diving Complex, travelled to the Australian City of Perth last month to compete in the World Masters Championships. Lindsay Dibden, Peter Nicholson and Ian Hammond together with Coach Chris Jenkins joined eight other divers from Great Britain to make the long journey for the competition which is held every two years in various World locations.

The event was a great success with over 5000 competitors arriving at the impressive Challenge Stadium to compete for World masters Titles in Diving, Swimming, Water Polo and Synchronised Swimming which all took place over a 10 day period.

The Southampton Divers performed superbly with Lindsay Dibden winning three World titles. The first two were in the 3 metre springboard and the highboard events. Then in the final events of the Diving competitions Lindsay, together with team-mate Peter Nicholson won the World Championship title in the highboard Synchronised Diving. Lindsay and Peter also took the silver medal in the 3 metre springboard Synchronised Diving, only just missing out on another Gold to the very strong Dutch partnership by 8 points.

Ian Hammond was up against some very experienced competition in his age group and had to compete against ex-Olympic divers! He achieved a very creditable 4th place, just missing out on a medal.

Chris Jenkins was delighted with the divers' achievements. She said "Having coached the divers for a number of years its is a wonderful sight to see all the hard work and training that the divers put in culminate in World Masters Championship medals"
