Media release for Southampton Diving Academy

AWARD

Eleven year old Georgie Wingrove scooped one of the coveted Michael Austin Harlick Outstanding Sportsperson Awards for 2007 at a ceremony held at Thornden Hall in Chandlers Ford on 13th November.

The ceremony is an annual event held by the Hampshire Schools' Sports Federation to present the Outstanding Young Sportsperson of the Year Awards.

The Southampton school girl, who is a talented diver training with Southampton Diving Academy at the Quays Swimming and Diving Complex, picked up the award based on her performance at the English Schools National Diving Championships in 2006, where she took the title for the Girls' Years 5 & 6 event. She has qualified to compete again in 2007 in the next age group and travels to Plymouth for the competition on 16th November.

In July 2007 Georgie competed in the English Senior National Diving Competition, where she was the youngest competitor in the Ladies Platform event, taking a creditable 8th place.

Also in 2007 she competed in the Czech Junior Open Diving Competition in Pardubice, where she won gold on platform and 3m springboard and silver on 1m springboard.

Coached by Charly Tomkys (22), recent winner of the UK Young Sports Coach of the year award for 2007, Georgie is considered to have an exciting future with the sport. "Georgie has been diving with me since she was six and is a very hard working and determined young diver," explained Charly. "Her results have been impressive, including beating an international diver this year. If she continues with her current progress I have no doubt that she will make her international debut in the next couple of years."
