A team of 33 divers from Southampton Diving Academy traveled to Plymouth to compete in the Armada Cup Diving Competition and came back with a total of 15 medals and the team trophy. Competing against top clubs from all over Great Britain the team put in an outstanding performance to take the title with 451 points, 80 points ahead of their nearest rivals, the City of Leeds Diving Club. The team boasted 4 gold, 5 silver and 6 bronze medals between them. Most successful diver on the team was Max Brick (14) who took 2 golds and a silver medal. Diving consistently well throughout the event and scoring personal best scores on all three boards, he particularly shone in the highboard event where he produced his best performance to date in competition with the hardest dive in his list, a back 1 ½ somersaults with 1 ½ twists. He also attracted scores of 8.5 and 9 with his reverse 2 ½ somersaults in the tucked position. Max was pushed into silver medal position on the 3m board by team mate Chris Mears (13), who was in outstanding form. Chris also took silver on highboard and just missed out on a medal on 1m, taking 4th place. The fourth gold medal came from Emily Alderman (15) in her highboard event. Continuing the excellent form that took her to Junior Europeans and Junior Worlds last year Emily has since been selected to join team mates Chris Mears and Max Brick to represent Great Britain in Aachen later this year. Other medalists were: Sam McSevich (10), Georgie Wingrove (11), Bethany Watts (11), Sam Knapp (12), Chris Farrow (15), Tom Owens (21) and Steve Appleby (16). Coach, Charly Tomkys, was delighted with the outcome. “It was a great event in every way,” she said. “The team performed well and demonstrated again the strength of the club at this, elite, level on the national scene. The divers also supported one another brilliantly and it was excellent experience for some of our younger ones who are just emerging as the stars of tomorrow.” Full results are as follows:
