Pupils from 40 schools in Southampton and the surrounding area took part in the fifth Southampton Schools' Diving Competition held at the Quays Eddie Read Swimming and Diving Complex on Saturday 16th June. In all there were 59 entrants from children in school years 1 – 8.
The event was opened by Blake Aldridge and Gareth Jones, who finished 10th in the World Cup in China last year, demonstrating a spectacular synchronised dive from the 10m board. Following the lunch break an Elite team of divers treated spectators to a thrilling routine, showing many of the skills that have taken them to the top of their sport nationally. Three of the team also represent Great Britain on the international circuit, including Max Brick (14), who won his first diving event at the inaugural Southampton Schools' Competition in 2003.
For many of the entrants this was their first competition experience. Opening with two rounds of jumps from the bath side and concluding with one skill from the 1m springboard, the most complex dive executed was a back dive tucked.
Gold medallists were Aimee Coppin (7), William Osborne (7), Emma Talbot (8), Scott Palmer (8), Lucy Tinson (10), Stuart McCallum (11), Sarah Burnett (13) and Nathan Burton (12).
The winning Primary School team was Braishfield Primary School, with Nursling Primary School in second place and last year's winners, Cupernham Junior School in 3rd.
Medals and trophies were presented at the end of the morning by Peter Waterfield, Olympic, Commonwealth and World medallist, who was undertaking his first official duty in his new role as president of Southampton Diving Academy. Gareth Jones took on the presentations for the afternoon's events.
The competitors also enjoyed the support of the Mayor of Southampton, Councillor Stephen Barnes-Andrews and his daughter, Jennifer.
Community Sports Coach for diving, Louise Alderman, was delighted by the success of the day. "All the divers performed well, even those with very little experience," she said. "They were a credit to their schools and their coaches."
