Members of Southampton Diving Academy, who train at the Quays Swimming and Diving Complex, comprised the biggest team competing at the ASA National Skills Final for diving at the Central Park Pool in Plymouth last week. The team of 32 came back with a gold, two silvers and a bronze medal between them, with most of the squad making the qualifying standard to enter the National Final in 2008. The most successful member of the group was eight year old Chelsey Stewart, who just nudged ahead to take the gold medal with her final dive, a back tuck roll from the 3m board, which earned her scores including a 9 from one of the judges. Oliver Khakoo (11) was unlucky not to take the title in his age group, when his consistency was marred by a hurdle step lower than his usual standard, which cost him the gold medal by less than a point. In her first year of diving Catherine Tilling (10) did well to take a silver medal just 3 points behind the winner with a score of 323.25. Making scores of 9's on most of her dives she showed herself to have great future potential in the toughest age group at the meet. Consistency was fifteen year old Rosie Pope's secret of success, bringing her the bronze medal in the B+ age group. On her final dive, knowing a medal was in the balance, she kept her cool to secure her place on the rostrum. Coach, Charly Tomkys, was delighted by the results. "Almost every one of our divers rose to the challenge of this national level competition by scoring more highly than in their qualifying meets," she said. "With such a strong squad coming through and aiming for the higher levels the club should be assured of some exciting events in the future." Full results: Group B+
