Media release for Southampton Diving Academy

CAMO

Two young divers who train with Southampton Diving Academy at the Quays Eddie Read Swimming and Diving Complex were selected to represent Great Britain in the Junior Team competing at CAMO in Canada.

Both Chris Mears (13) and Emily Alderman (14) have been members of National Training Programmes in recent years and their outstanding performances this year earned them places on the team.

Chris did particularly well to come back with two bronze medals in the 1m and 3m springboard events, performing beyond expectations. Having started the meet by dissipating his nerves on his platform event, where he took 9th place, he went on to attack his springboard events with great determination. His concentration since September on learning to “spot” his forward 3 ˝ somersaults from the 3m board paid off when he put in an excellent dive, securing him his place on the rostrum.

Emily put in a steady performance on highboard, earning herself a place in the final. However, unusually she was unable to maintain her balance on her armstand which cost her several places, finishing with a still creditable 9th position.

Director of Coaching, Lindsey Fraser, who coaches both youngsters, was delighted with the outcome. “Both Chris and Emily are doing very well on the international scene,” she said. “I am very proud of them and am looking forward to seeing them consolidate their places in the national squad this year.”
