Media release for Peter Waterfield, Olympic Diver
Peter scoops first and
second place at trials

OLYMPIC diver Peter Waterfield from Southampton took first and second place in the 10 metre platform and one metre event respectively at the British Championships and Commonwealth Games Trials in Manchester last weekend (December 16 and 18).

He has been nominated by British Performance Director, Steve Foley to represent England in the 10 metre platform and is being considered for nomination for the one metre event at the Games next year, where he will have the chance to compete to retain his Commonwealth championship title.

Peter will also be put forward to compete in the synchro event at the Games with partner, Leon Taylor. The duo were unable to perform at the trials as Leon is currently injured, but are being nominated for the team based on their high standard of performance in 2005 and previous years.

Peter said: “I won the 10 metre individual event, which means I stand a very good chance of competing in the event at the Games in Melbourne. This means I can perform to retain my Commonwealth championship title.”

He had some tough competition from other British divers including Ben Swain from Sheffield who took first place in the one metre event and from his Southampton team mate, Gareth Jones who secured second in the 10 metre platform.

During the event, Peter gained a number of perfect 10 scores for his 10 metre platform dives. He also achieved more than 100 points on his back two and a half twist performance in the platform preliminary event.

Peter could be joined by four other divers from Southampton Diving Academy at the Commonwealth Games in March including Gary Hunt, Gareth Jones, Stacie Powell and Monique McCaroll who has a confirmed place in the Scotland team.

The official nominations for the team should be announced by Steve Foley before Christmas. The Commonwealth Games Federation of England will then select the squad.

Peter took the first British medal of last year’s Olympic Games in Athens with partner Leon and is ranked second in the world in the synchro event and fifth individually.
