National Skills Finals 2015

Southampton Diving Academy claim 2 National Skills Champions and a haul of medals.

Manchester Aquatics Centre was the venue for the 2015 National Skills Finals this Summer. This is the biggest annual diving event at this level, with 238 divers taking part from across Great Britain all competing for the title of National Champion within their age range. Divers below the age of 14 compete over a total of 12 dives/jumps with 4 from each of the poolside, 1m and 3m springboard. Over the age of 14, the divers perform 6 dives each from the 1m and 3m springboard.

The SDA team of 35 young divers, aged from 9 to 16, gave a first class performance, with 2 National Champions, 4 silver and 2 bronze medalists emerging over the weekend, and a further 13 achieving top 10 placings.

Dulcie Wilson got off to a fantastic start in the girls 10 years category, diving her way to a silver medal, just 0.95 points off the gold in a group with 25 divers.
Meanwhile, in the boys 10 years group, SDA were dominant. Leon Baker gave a brilliant performance scoring a rare 9 on the 3m springboard to take the gold. Leon was joined on the podium by Robbie Lee who took the silver medal, a massive 22 points clear of third place.
In the girls 12 years group, all 4 SDA girls finished in the top 8, with Victoria Ward diving consistently well, breaking her PB and taking the silver medal.
In the next age category, girls 13 years, SDA had all 4 divers in the top 11 placings. Megan Curtis was on top form, taking the gold with Ella Anderson taking the silver medal and joining her team mate on the podium.
Catherine Palmer in the girls 14/16 years, fought hard for 3rd position, winning the bronze by the narrowest of margins, 0.25 points. Meanwhile in the same age category for the boys, Alfie Lakeman-Brown was competing in a really strong field and took bronze, missing silver by an agonising 0.20 points.

Many of these divers have come through the programme’s “Talent Identification” scheme and they made a very good showing, perfectly illustrating the effectiveness of this initiative. The club is hopeful that the solid foundations set in these early stages will be a great platform to build on for the future.

Senior SDA Diving Coach, Jack Clewlow, was clearly pleased with the results “I was delighted with the performance of the Southampton divers. It demonstrates the high quality of diving that is going on at this level of the sport within our programme.”
