On Sunday 7th May 19 SDA divers competed at the first Kent County ASA Open Novice Skills competition in Tunbridge Wells. This was an opportunity for the divers to gain valuable competition experience as well as a chance to achieve qualification points required to attend national skills this summer. Many of the Southampton divers are quite new to the sport and had never competed away from home before, so this really was a leap into the unknown for them. In this event divers up to 14 years of age are required to compete 12 dives or jumps each, 4 from the poolside, 4 from the 1m springboard and 4 from the 3m springboard. Those over 14 years compete 6 dives from the 1m and 4 dives from the 3m.
SDA got off to a fantastic start with Ethan Pearce-Williams taking Gold in boys aged 8/9 years in his first diving competition away from Southampton. Another one of SDA’s youngest divers also made a great impression on the day; Megan Thorpe took the silver medal in the equivalent girls group, scoring a brilliant 273.50 points.
Further medal winning performances came from Isaac Beard in boys 12/13 years who took a bronze medal after a strong performance with a good number of 8’s amongst his scoreline.
In boys 14 years+ Finlay McGregor put in a consistent performace to take the silver medal, just ahead of team mate Bradley Light in the bronze medal position.
SDA’s success continued throughout the competition with a total of 9 top 6 places for our divers.
The competition resulted in 7 new divers achieving their qualification points for national skills. Well done to the following; Ethan Pearce-Williams, Megan Thorpe, Emily Jerrim, Leo Tegg, Isaac Beard, Amy Leneve and Finlay McGregor.
Coach Matt Roberts said “We are delighted with how the team performed. The Divers conducted themselves very well at the event and the Team came away with a handful of personal bests and medals. It is great to see our pre skills divers performing to a high standard at this Level.
