Southampton Diving Academy’s Head Coach Lindsey Fraser accompanied a small team of divers to The GStar Diving Championships 2015 in Leeds earlier this month.
A busy diving calendar meant that the team travelling to Leeds consisted of just one girl and seven boys; Lucy Hawkins, Scott Palmer, William Osborne, Elliot Moorhouse, Tyler Lane, Thomas Bailey, Cameron Gammage and Angus Kerr.
All of the team achieved personal best scores, many of them in multiple events. Several team members were also performing newly learned dives and achieved some good results with them.
Top SDA diver was Angus Kerr, winning a Silver and Bronze medal in the Boys 12/13 Years. In the 3m springboard event Angus performed 3 excellent dives in the final to finish in 3rd place, improving his 5th place preliminary position. On the last day of competition he then won the preliminary of his platform event, ahead of one of GB’s top divers in this age group, receiving scores of 8’s for his reverse dive pike, he was then forced to settle for the silver later that day in the final despite a strong finish. Team mate Cameron Gammage battled alongside Angus in this age group, achieving personal best scores in all three of his events and joined his teammate on the podium in the platform event to pick up the bronze medal – both boys had strong performances in the platform final.
13 year old Thomas Bailey, who finished top SDA boy in the 14/15 years 3m Springboard and Platform events was pleased with his performance, commenting: “I was nervous for my inward two and a half somersaults tuck, but this was the first time I managed to do it well since the Southampton Invitational last October and scored 44.55 points for it! I was also pleased because I even scored 8 & 8.5’s on my first dive! On platform I had some new dives. I actually feel I dived consistently and I did well. I got a new PB by 40 points so I was very happy!”
Lindsey said ‘I was very impressed with the performances of our divers in a very strong competition. They were a credit to SDA in their performances and behaviour’
