Southampton Diving Academy had a busy February half term, sending a team of 20 divers to Plymouth under the watchful eyes of coaching team Jack Clewlow and Matt Roberts, to compete in a fast paced 3 day event attended by clubs from the whole of the UK. The standard was high with some Commonwealth divers in attendance as well as young divers testing themselves for the first time at this level. With a preliminary round in each event on the 1m springboard, the 3m springboard and platform, the top 6 placed divers progress to the finals.
The competition was fierce but the young SDA squad held their own under pressure and came back with plenty of spoils to keep Southampton firmly planted on the UK diving map.
With the first events of the meet being the synchronised diving SDA got off to a good start with Tilly Brown partnering Summer Radcliffe from Plymouth diving club taking the gold on the 1m in the 13 years and under girls event. In the girls 14 years and over on the 3m, new pairing Maya Kutty and Evelyna Johnson also took an unexpected gold.
Tilly was the star of the meet going on to repeat her success in the synchro in all of her individual events with a further 3 gold medals representing a clean sweep on the 1m, 3m and Platform in the Girls 12/13 years category. Team mate Dulcie Wilson was hot on her heels making all 3 finals and taking a bronze on the platform.
Our Boys 12/13 years were out in force, Milo French making all 3 finals and taking gold on the platform, and bronze on both the 1m and 3m springboards in a strong group. Oliver Covell also performed well making it to the 1m finals, finishing a creditable 4th place in the final.
In the girls 14/15 years, Evie Johnson was in fighting spirit against a tough field, taking a gold on the 3m and silver on both the 1m and platform.
Team mate Maya Kutty was equally fired up making all 3 finals, and taking the bronze on the 1m.
Over in the Boys 14/15 years competition, Nathan Bull performed at his best to take silver on the 1m and 3m springboards and bronze on the platform. Team mates Alex Walton making the finals on 1m and platform and Ethan Bennett also making the platform final.
The youngsters in the squad representing Boys 10/11 years made a good account of themselves, as for most this was the first major competition of their careers so far. Reuben Havenga defied the odds making the final on the 5m Platform and eventually finishing in 5th spot.
Anjali Kutty in Girls 10/11 years was also diving well having missed 2 weeks of training due to illness, she made all 3 finals and took bronze in the 5m Platform event.
Coach Jack Clewlow said “this was a youthful and inexperienced team, but nonetheless our results were impressive across the board. I hope this is the start of an exciting and successful competitive career for these young divers.”
